Having gained accelerated promotion, he was appointed Procurator Fiscal at Wick in 1983 and thereafter held similar posts at Dornoch, Tain and Dingwall, retiring from his post as Procurator Fiscal, Dingwall in 2001. He was a member and latterly chairman of the Highland Child Protection Committee. In 2001 he returned to private practice and now is a defence lawyer with his own practice assisted by his wife, who runs his office. He is the author of Hingston’s Law, a series of articles published monthly in the local newspapers on various aspects of criminal law and practice of interest to the general public.
