David Hingston and his carDavid Hingston graduated in Law from Edinburgh University in 1972, undertook his apprenticeship in Edinburgh and was admitted as a solicitor in 1974. Since 1975 he has practised exclusively in criminal law. He has served at the Law Commission for Scotland, taught as a tutor in Criminal Law and demonstrator in Criminal Practice at Edinburgh University. He is a co-author of the criminal procedure article in the authoritative Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia. He was a member of the Procurator Fiscal Service for 26 years.

Having gained accelerated promotion, he was appointed Procurator Fiscal at Wick in 1983 and thereafter held similar posts at Dornoch, Tain and Dingwall, retiring from his post as Procurator Fiscal, Dingwall in 2001. He was a member and latterly chairman of the Highland Child Protection Committee.

In 2001 he returned to private practice and now is a defence lawyer with his own practice assisted by his wife, who runs his office. He is the author of Hingston’s Law, a series of articles published monthly in the local newspapers on various aspects of criminal law and practice of interest to the general public.
