Legal Aid

Hingstons are authorised by the Scottish Legal Aid Board to provide legal advice, assistance and representation on legal aid.

You may be eligible for legal aid to pay for advice or representation from Hingstons. If legal aid is granted, it pays all the legal costs of the case. If legal aid is refused, you will have to pay the full cost yourself.

The rules governing legal aid are set down by the Scottish Executive. To obtain legal aid, you have to meet two tests. One is financial and the other is that legal aid should be granted "in the interests of justice." Legal aid can be refused on either, or both, bases. The requirements are different depending upon whether you are simply seeking advice or intend to plead guilty on the one hand, or intend to plead not guilty on the other.
